Water spills over an eavestrough during rain, so you arrange a cleaning. The leaves are removed—but the next rainfall produces the same overflow.
What was missed?
Debris is one possible cause, but the drainage route also depends on the eavestrough’s alignment, condition and connection to the downspout. Water dripping through a joint or running behind the gutter may require a different response from water spilling over its front edge.
Before booking another cleaning, identify where the water appears and ask for that location to be assessed.

Start by identifying how the water escapes
Watch from a safe ground-level position or through a window. Do not climb a ladder during rainfall to inspect the gutter.
Try to distinguish between these patterns:
- Water spilling over the front edge
- Dripping beneath a joint or corner
- Water running between the gutter and the building
- Overflow concentrated beside a downspout
- Water backing up at a downspout connection
- Pooling where the downspout discharges
Describe the location using a recognizable feature: “above the garage door,” “at the rear corner” or “beside the front downspout.”
A short video can help show the pattern if it can be taken safely. Note whether the problem occurs during ordinary rain or only during particularly intense rainfall.
The observation helps guide the visit. It does not establish the cause on its own.
When is debris the likely starting point?
Leaves, twigs and other buildup can obstruct the gutter channel or the outlet leading into a downspout.
If the issue started after substantial leaf fall, cleaning is a reasonable task to discuss. However, removing visible debris from the gutter does not establish that the whole route is clear.
Ask whether the service includes the outlets and accessible downspouts, rather than only the horizontal gutter runs.
Apple Roofing’s eavestrough cleaning service includes debris removal, downspout cleaning and drainage checks. Explain the overflow location when booking so the concern can be considered during the visit.
If the system has already been cleaned, provide the date and any findings from that work.
What if the downspout is blocked?
An eavestrough can appear clear while its outlet or downspout remains restricted.
Overflow near an outlet is a reason to assess that section, but it does not prove where the obstruction is. Ask what can be checked and whether a connected underground section falls outside the service.
Some downspouts discharge above ground; others connect to another drainage arrangement. The contractor needs to know which applies before attempting to establish the problem.
If a concealed pipe requires investigation, another drainage specialist may be needed. Clarify who will arrange that work.
Avoid pushing tools into the system yourself or assuming that water poured into the gutter confirms the condition of every connected component.
Could the eavestrough’s slope or alignment be wrong?
Water needs a suitable route toward the outlet. A clear gutter can still perform poorly if part of the run does not direct water as intended.
Ask whether the assessment includes alignment, visible sagging and the position of the outlets.
IKO identifies gutter slope, gutter selection and the number of downspouts as factors to investigate when gutters overflow.
Cleaning does not correct every alignment or layout problem. If adjustment is recommended, ask which section is affected and how the proposed work will change water flow.
A statement such as “the gutter needs fixing” is incomplete. You should understand whether the proposal involves cleaning, adjustment, repair or replacement.
Is it overflow—or a leaking joint?
Water dripping beneath a corner or connection may indicate a localized leak rather than the gutter filling and spilling over.
Record the exact point where dripping occurs. Ask whether the joint, nearby material and support need assessment.
A cleaning proposal may exclude joint repairs. Confirm this before the visit, particularly if the drip is your main concern.
If a repair is recommended, ask what condition was found and what preparation is included. Applying sealant without assessing the joint’s condition may leave another defect unresolved.
If water is both spilling over and dripping through a connection, both observations should be recorded. They may require separate work.
What does water running behind the gutter mean?
Water between the gutter and the building deserves a closer assessment of the roof-edge arrangement.
The inspector may need to examine the gutter’s position, the roof edge and accessible details where runoff should enter the channel.
Do not assume that replacing the gutter is sufficient or that the roof covering must be replaced. Ask which component is implicated and what evidence supports the recommendation.
If staining, damaged finishes or deterioration is visible nearby, document it. The contractor should explain whether it is part of the proposed work or requires separate assessment.
A roof inspection may be appropriate where the concern involves the roof edge or another roofing detail beyond cleaning.
Why might overflow occur only during heavy rain?
The rainfall pattern is useful context.
If the system drains during ordinary rain but spills during intense rainfall, ask whether the assessment needs to consider layout and capacity as well as blockages.
Provide details about where runoff concentrates. Does the overflow occur beneath a roof valley, near an upper downspout or along a particular section?
IKO notes that inadequate gutter or downspout arrangements can be relevant even when the gutter slope is correct.
That does not establish that larger gutters are automatically the answer. Ask how the proposed change suits the roof area and drainage route.
Likewise, do not dismiss repeated overflow as unavoidable simply because it happens during heavy rain. The system’s condition still needs consideration.

Check where the water goes after leaving the downspout
A clear gutter and downspout can move water successfully off the roof while discharging it into an unsuitable location.
Observe from the ground whether water pools beside the home, flows toward an entrance or runs back toward the foundation.
Government of Canada guidance recommends directing downspout discharge toward a suitable drainage area and away from the foundations of surrounding homes where possible.
Do not move a downspout outlet without considering the surrounding property. A change should not create a problem for a neighbouring building or a pedestrian route.
If the concern involves grading, buried drainage or a shared arrangement, ask which specialist needs to assess it. Gutter cleaning alone does not resolve those conditions.
Will gutter guards eliminate maintenance?
Do not treat guards as a substitute for checking drainage.
If guards are installed, tell the contractor what type they are and whether previous work involved removing or disturbing them.
Ask whether cleaning includes the guards, the gutter beneath them and the outlets. Confirm whether removal and reinstatement are included where needed.
If overflow began after installation, report that timing without assuming the guards are the confirmed cause. Their condition and interaction with the existing system need assessment.
Before installing new guards, discuss the debris affecting your property and how the selected arrangement will be maintained.
What should an eavestrough service quote include?
Ask for a scope that addresses the observed problem.
| Item | What to clarify |
|---|---|
| Gutter cleaning | Runs included and debris disposal |
| Outlets and downspouts | Accessible sections checked or cleared |
| Gutter guards | Cleaning, removal and reinstatement arrangements |
| Drainage checks | What the check can establish and its limits |
| Repairs | Whether joints, supports or alignment work are included |
| Connected drainage | Any buried sections excluded |
| Documentation | Findings, photos and further recommendations |
If access is restricted above an addition or beside another property, mention it when requesting the quote.
Ask how extra work is approved. A contractor may identify a concern during cleaning that requires a separate proposal.
For roof repair and maintenance, make sure any related roofing work is distinguished from the cleaning service.
How should you check whether the work helped?
Keep the service findings and completion records.
During a later rainfall, observe the original location from a safe position. Does water still escape in the same way? Has the pattern changed?
If the problem returns, send the contractor a short description or safe video and refer to the earlier work. “The rear corner still drips at the joint” is more informative than “the gutters are still bad.”
Ask what further assessment is needed rather than automatically booking another identical cleaning.
Where the work addressed only a blockage, any previously identified alignment, joint or discharge concern may still remain.
Schedule fall maintenance around the property’s conditions
October is a useful time to review drainage, but one cleaning date does not suit every property.
Trees may continue shedding leaves after a visit. Ask whether the timing or a follow-up should reflect the debris around your home.
Avoid assuming that cleaning guarantees freedom from winter ice problems. Recurring roof-edge ice may require assessment of other roof and building conditions.
The maintenance plan should address what was actually found and identify changes that warrant further attention.
Get the overflow location assessed
Tell us where the water escapes, when it occurs and whether the system has recently been cleaned. Share safe photos or video and mention any known gutter guards or connected drainage.
We can assess the accessible eavestrough and downspout conditions and explain whether cleaning or further work is appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do my eavestroughs still overflow after cleaning?
The outlet or downspout may remain restricted, or alignment, layout or another condition may need assessment. Report where and when the overflow occurs and ask what the previous service checked.
Does dripping at an eavestrough corner mean it is blocked?
Not necessarily. Dripping through a corner or joint can be different from water spilling over the edge. The connection and drainage should be assessed, and any repair should be distinguished from cleaning.
Should downspout checks be included in gutter cleaning?
Ask for the scope before booking. Clearing the horizontal gutter alone does not establish that the outlet, downspout or connected drainage is clear. Confirm which accessible sections are included and what remains excluded.
